2016 Cappies Scholarship Awarded to Phoenixville High School Student
By Matt Thornton*
The 2016 Greater Philadelphia Cappies awards were held on May 15th at Unionville High School. This was the eleventh gala in the program’s history, having started when Casey and I were seniors back in 2006. That night our Springfield Theater Workshop (STW) production of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple won the Cappie for Best Play. Casey accepted on behalf of the cast and crew. That entire day is still vivid and among my happiest memories of high school that I was fortunate enough to share with Casey.
This year, the Feldmans graciously asked if I would present the Cappies scholarship that bares Casey’s name. It was a profound honor to do so and being at the gala flooded me with happy memories of acting together with Casey, STW, and high school theater in general.
So too was the joy in presenting the award to a talented and promising young student who was conferred with the scholarship. Aditi Biswas, a senior at Phoenixville Area High School, was nominated by her faculty advisor Christine Tavani for her excellence in journalism, volunteerism, and creative writing.
A Cappie winner herself as a member of the 2014 Best Critic Team from Phoenixville Area High School, Aditi will be attending Towson University in the fall. Her list of accomplishments through high school is distinguished: lead critic for her Cappie group, business head of MiniTHON which raised over $15,000, a 2015 Silver Key award winner for the Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition, writer for the school newspaper, student representative to the school board, and a Red Cross volunteer. Aditi reflects all of the qualities looked for in the scholarship and is a thoroughly deserving recipient. Congratulations, Aditi!
